The Problem with Ford EcoBoost Engines
The 1.0 litre Ford EcoBoost engine has been fitted since 2012, for example in the Ford Fiesta, Focus and C-Max. It is a three-cylinder unit. EcoBoost engines are compact powerhouses that easily match larger engines in power and torque. Highly compressed air is forced into the engine, producing an additional increase in output.
Why Does Engine Damage Occur?
Cause 1: Cracks in the Cylinder Head
This compression very often leads to overloading of the engine. The reason is the high temperatures generated whilst driving. This increases the risk of small cracks forming in the cylinder head, through which coolant escapes. The result: Ford EcoBoost engine damage.
Cause 2: The Timing Belt Runs in Oil
Another typical failure is timing belt damage. On the EcoBoost engine the timing belt runs in an oil bath. For this reason a special plasticiser is added to the engine oil to prevent the belt from hardening.
One cause of failure is therefore the use of incorrect engine oil – only specifically approved oil may be used in this engine. The consequence of using the wrong oil: the timing belt dries out and can snap, leading to engine damage.
If the belt begins to break up, rubber particles also enter the oil circuit and can block the oil pick-up screen – causing oil starvation and consequential damage to bearings and turbocharger.
How to Recognise Impending Damage
- Coolant loss with no visible external leak
- White smoke from the exhaust
- Overheating or fluctuating coolant temperature
- Oil pressure warning or unusual engine noises
- Loss of performance and rough running
