The MINI timing chain now shows a range of problems that lead to engine damage. The timing chain is an essential part of the engine and was long regarded as virtually maintenance-free. Our customers experience daily that this is unfortunately not the case.
Because of the enormous physical forces acting on it, the timing chain stretches over time. On your MINI this becomes noticeable as the engine's internal timing is disrupted: the engine runs less smoothly and uses more fuel.
At a certain point the stretch has progressed so far that the MINI timing chain jumps. The result is catastrophic engine damage.
It must be said in advance that not every defect in the MINI timing chain is noticeable. Look out for these symptoms:
Diagnostic equipment can in some cases detect chain stretch by comparing the crankshaft and camshaft sensors. As this is not part of a routine service, it must be requested specifically – be sure to ask your workshop for it.
Depending on mileage and driving style, piston damage, bearing damage and occasionally coolant loss can also occur. If the chain jumps, the open valves strike the pistons – in extreme cases the entire combustion chamber is destroyed.
If the chain has stretched but not yet jumped, it is often possible to replace the timing chain, guide and tensioning rails and the chain tensioner – considerably cheaper than a complete engine.
If engine damage has already occurred, we can supply a fully overhauled replacement engine for MINI and BMW – either fitted in our master workshop or despatched to your own workshop. Suitable engines are the Mini N12B16A and the BMW | Mini 1.6 TDI.
