Is the electric motor in your Renault Zoe or Smart EQ making unusual noises? Humming, whistling, whining or vibrations can indicate worn motor bearings. We investigate the cause and find a suitable solution for your vehicle.
Bearing wear often develops gradually. Look out for changes that occur while driving or accelerating:
These symptoms can have other causes, too. A fault code alone does not confirm a bearing failure. That is why we inspect your vehicle and electric drive before recommending a repair.
In addition to mechanical stress, electrical currents can pass through the bearings and damage their surfaces. This damage can accelerate wear and eventually lead to noticeable noises.
We carry out a professional diagnosis to determine the cause and identify the components affected.
A damaged motor bearing does not always mean that the complete electric motor needs to be replaced. We professionally remove the electric motor, replace the worn main bearings and reinstall the motor.
You can choose between standard bearings and an upgrade with specially ceramic-coated main bearings. We will discuss which solution is suitable for your vehicle.
Is your Renault Zoe or Smart EQ making unusual noises or displaying a fault message? Contact us with your model, year of manufacture and, if available, the vehicle identification number and any fault codes.
We will inspect the problem and discuss the appropriate repair with you.
A broken piston ring land must be diagnosed without delay. With a broken piston ring land, we inspect compression, piston damage and the cylinder bore. Repair of a broken piston ring land depends on the condition of the engine block. After a broken piston ring land failure, we explain the most economical repair option.
A 1.4 TSI broken ring land requires accurate inspection of the piston and cylinder bore before repair.
A 1.4 TSI broken ring land often causes power loss, rough running, increased oil consumption and blue exhaust smoke.
The 1.4 TSI has a reputation for being economical and punchy – right up until the engine starts running rough, noticeably loses power and sends blue smoke out of the exhaust. The cause is often a broken ring land: the narrow web between the piston rings breaks away, usually above the top ring. Behind it, almost always, is knocking combustion that pushes the piston beyond its thermal and mechanical limits.
We stripped down an engine of exactly this kind and show you what came to light – including the dual-mass flywheel, which had suffered along with it.
The piston carries three rings: two compression rings and an oil control ring. Between the ring grooves sits a narrow web of material, the ring land. It is only a few millimetres thick, yet it has to absorb the full combustion pressure and transfer it into the piston crown.
In modern downsized engines such as the 1.4 TSI, this land works permanently at its limit. Add uncontrolled combustion and the cylinder pressure rises abruptly to a multiple of the intended figure – and the land breaks away.
Under knocking, the mixture ignites at several points at once instead of burning evenly outwards from the spark plug. Pre-ignition is particularly damaging: the mixture ignites before the piston has reached top dead centre, so the piston works against its own upward travel. Typical triggers are:
The 1.4 TSI of the EA111 series was used across the group – both as a straightforward turbo engine and as a twincharger with an additional supercharger. Broken ring lands occur mainly on the highly boosted variants; affected engine codes include CAVA, CAVD and CAVE as well as CAXA and CAXC.
These engines were fitted in, among others:
The suspicion can be confirmed with a compression and leak-down test. If the air escapes audibly into the crankcase, the seal between piston and cylinder wall has been destroyed. An endoscope then shows whether the ring land has broken away and whether the cylinder bore has already been scored.
A cylinder that no longer burns cleanly puts the entire drivetrain out of balance. The dual-mass flywheel is there to damp exactly these torsional vibrations – but with an engine fault developing, it works continuously against load changes it was never designed for. The result is worn spring packs and excessive free play.
That is why we check the flywheel with every engine failure and, in case of doubt, replace it at the same time. Removing the engine later purely for the flywheel costs the same labour as taking the engine out in the first place.
A broken ring land always means a new piston. What matters is how badly the cylinder bore has suffered: the broken pieces travel between piston and cylinder wall and leave score marks behind. Light marks can be dealt with by honing, deep ones cannot.
We strip the engine, measure the cylinder block and tell you honestly what is worth doing. If the block is beyond saving, we can supply a fully overhauled replacement engine 1.4 TSI – either fitted in our master workshop including nationwide vehicle collection, or despatched to your own workshop.
For a wider look at how vulnerable the small turbocharged engines from the VW group are, read our article on the problems with the 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TSI engines.

Engine Damage News: In the event of engine damage we can repair your engine. Unfortunately our customers often hear the opposite from their own workshop. That is because it is more profitable for workshops to sell new cars – so less and less is repaired. In fact, reconditioning is entirely straightforward for many engines. Afterwards they run perfectly again and you can keep your vehicle for many years to come.
Our customers repeatedly ask us: “Why did my engine fail, and why do you have to repair the engine?” On our news pages we have gathered information about problems with various engines. The causes are varied: material problems have become more frequent in recent years. In addition, vehicles are required to emit ever fewer pollutants – which leads to smaller, more highly stressed engines.
