General overhauled 2.8 / 2.9 VR6 engine

The VR6 engine - A legend becomes a classic car

The first VR6 engine from Volkswagen turned 30 in spring 2021. What was special about this engine in the early 1990s was that all 6 cylinders were arranged in a V-shape on a bank due to the compact design. There is also a slightly larger bore of 82.0 instead of 81.0 mm. This gives the VR6 engine a displacement of 2.9 l and a whopping 190 hp. The engine was first installed in the VW Corrado and later also in the Syncro version in the VW Golf and Passat.

The overhaul of the VR6 engines is the starting signal for Wagner engines. It all started with these engines. But what's the problem with these engines and why have we overhauled so many of them?

On the VR6 engines, the piston from the bypass valve works its way into the housing and jams, since the oil pump on the earlier models supplies too much oil pressure.

Does your VW T4, Golf III, Passat, Sharan or Corrado have high oil consumption or engine damage?

With us, you get a refurbished VR6 engine (without attachments). We overhaul the VR6 replacement engines exclusively in-house.

We carry out the following work on the overhauled engine:

In principle, we completely disassemble the VR6 engine, clean it and check all components for wear. We then replace all worn or damaged components without exception. The crank mechanism is then measured and the bearing shells renewed. In addition, the liners are drilled to oversize 82.0/82.5 and new pistons are installed.

In addition, we check the cylinder head for warpage and plan it if necessary. We also check the valve guides. We machine the valves and valve seats accordingly or replace them with new ones and additionally grind them in. Furthermore, we also install new valve stem seals. The oil pump and the complete chain drive are always renewed.

Additional costs

In our experience, there are always other problems with these vehicles. Which parts also have to be replaced varies greatly and can only be recognized once we have removed the engine. Therefore, we cannot give any general information about possible additional costs.

You will also incur costs for oil, oil filter and small parts as well as any additional work (e.g. damaged threads, engine bearings, additional work on axle parts, replacement of defective add-on parts, etc.). In many vehicles, we also have to drain the climate gas in order to be able to carry out the engine replacement. We then fill it up completely again. This can continue to result in costs for the shortage of gas.

For reasons of liability, we do not install any spare parts you have brought with you in our workshop. We offer you the collection of your vehicle throughout Germany at favorable conditions.

Note on the old engine:

Your VR6 engine must be overhaulable: That means the cylinder head and engine block must not show any irreparable damage such as cracks or fractures. Furthermore, the valves must not be torn off. Your engine must also not be made up of defective parts. If your engine cannot be overhauled, we charge a surcharge for the additional effort. Please read our note on the overtaking ability.

We also offer the VR6 engine for sale to garages. If you are interested, please contact us.
